What does volunteering in aged care look like?

Volunteering in aged care offers many opportunities to make a difference. You might help by driving older people to appointments or shopping trips, having friendly chats in residential aged care facilities, assisting with social activities, or delivering meals. There’s a way for everyone to contribute.

While many aged care volunteer roles require a regular commitment, they can still be flexible. You don’t need to stick to the same schedule every week for years. You can take breaks for holidays, and most organisations provide flexible options for days and times.

Your efforts as a volunteer will be incredibly meaningful to older people. Volunteers in aged care play a vital role in reducing social isolation and fostering stronger community connections. By volunteering, you also support older people’s independence, helping them stay in their homes for longer.

What do I need to volunteer in aged care?

You don’t need any special qualifications to volunteer in aged care. What really matters is having an interest in supporting older people, being a good listener, and approaching the volunteer role with empathy.

Depending on the organisation and role, you might need to complete a National Police Check or other screenings. Some training, such as First Aid, may also be required to help you feel prepared and confident in your volunteer work.
